High Tech Heretic


Technology accounts for over $5 Billion a year in spending at the K-12 level. There is a fairly constant flow of new technologies and an ever increasing amount of new research discussing the efficacy of technology usage.

There has also been a backlash against this spending. As teachers in a technology oriented world, you are likely to run into negative attitudes and pressures from this backlash. It is important to be able to be familiar with the point of view that drives these sentiments.


The most famous of the contrarians is Clifford Stoll. His High Tech Heretic: Why Computers Don't Belong in the Classroom and Other Reflections by a Computer Contrarian is very popular with the circles that believe computers do not belong in the classroom. Read this interview at

Break your group into two sections. One section will research information to support Stollís treatise and the other will refute it. Present your positions to the class.
